He was born in Pisa in 1963 and now lives in Rome. In 1994 he started to create vignettes and short stories on satirical magazine Cuore. His first comic book stories were published on monthly Blue. In 2002 he began to work with Coconino PressbHouse, publishing eleven comic books. Appunti per una storia di guerra (2006) won the Gran Premio Romics and the most important european award for the best comic book of the year at the Festival International de la bande dessinée d’Angoulême. Several Gipi’s works : Esterno Notte (2003), Questa è la stanza (2005), S. (2006), LMVDM - La Mia Vita Disegnata Male (2008), the anthology Diario di fiume e altre storie (2009), Verticali (2009) and Baci dalla provincia (2011) were translated and published across Europe, USA and Asia. Gipi placed side by side the creation of graphic novels to illustrations for italian and foreign press by collaborating with among others: la Repubblica, Internazionale, Süddeutsche Zeitung. He created the animated intro for TV programme Le Invasioni Barbariche. After having signed short films and independent videos, in 2011 he made his debut as a film director with L’Ultimo Terrestre, produced by Fandango and successfully presented at the 68th Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia. Hereafter he attended the Torino Film Festival with a medium-length movie titled Smettere di Fumare Fumando (2012). In 2013 he returned to comics with the graphic novel Unastoria which in 2014 won the Special Award ‘’40 anni di Mondello’’ inside Premio Letterario Internazionale Mondello and entered among the twelve finalists of Premio Strega.
